Five Genuine Jobs You Can Do From Home

September 10, 2012 By Crispin Jones - Guest Poster For WorkAtHomeTruth 1 Comment

Even as recently as a decade ago, advertisements for “Work from Home” jobs were mostly scams.  However, thanks to the widespread availability of high speed internet connections and unified communications solutions, there are more and more people enjoying the privilege of working remotely.  There are still a lot of scam advertisements out there, but there is an increasing number of genuine remote working opportunities.  Here are a few of the most interesting genuine home working opportunities:

1.       Customer Service

Instead of cramming people into call centers, more and more companies are letting customer service employees work from home.  There are few barriers for telephone or web based operatives when it comes to working remotely.  All they need is a good computer and internet connection that can run the company’s unified communications suite, and a headset clear enough for callers to understand them.

So, if you ever hear a TV or a barking dog when you call a customer service hotline, now you know why!

2.       Translation

If you’re bi-lingual, then working as a translator can be a satisfying career.  Salaries for translators vary depending on the languages involved, but pay can be pretty good if you speak a language that is in demand.  The work is flexible too.

3.       Web Development

Web developers have been working remotely for a long time. As with most technology related jobs, as early adopters, they were one of the pioneers of the idea of working anywhere they could plug in their phones and laptops.

Competition is fierce in the world of web development, and even more so in the world of web design.  However, if you have the skills required to code dynamic, interactive websites you can make a good career out of web development.

4.       Travel Agents

Properly trained and accredited travel agents can make a decent salary.  The world of travel has changed a lot recently, and a lot of budget travellers are opting to book online rather than use an agent.  There are some niches (cruises, honeymoons, aspirational/lifestyle tours) that do still see a lot of travel agent bookings, though.

The field of Work at Home Travel Agents is growing rapidly at the moment.  If you’re considering trying your hand at this sort of job, do some research before you pay for any training courses. Make sure that the company you’re working with is one that’s been in the industry for a long time, and is recognized by holidaymakers.

5.       Virtual Assistants

Virtual assistants are becoming incredibly popular with smaller companies that can’t justify hiring a full time employee, but need a bit of help – perhaps during a specific season, or in the run-up to a major conference.

Salaries for virtual assistants can vary massively, depending on whether you go-it alone or work with an outsourcing firm, and also depending on the size of the company you’re working for.  However, it can be a rewarding job, both financially, and in terms of the people you get to meet and work with.
