Choosing The Best printers for Apple (Mac, iPad & iPhone)

July 18, 2013 By Andy Harrison - Guest Poster For WorkAthomeTruth Leave a Comment

Printing from Apple products

Apple has a way of doing things very differently. In 2010, Apple introduced AirPrint technology to print from iPhone, iPad and Mac wirelessly. No drivers were required for this purpose. But the problem was there were only a few printers that had this AirPrint technology. So printing was made difficult for a few years. Now almost all the manufactures are incorporating this AirPrint technology into their printers.

If you already didn’t know this, AirPrint and Wi-Fi are  not the same. AirPrint is a communication protocol which uses Wi-Fi as a medium.

Integrating Social Media and VoIP

March 4, 2013 By Danny Gallagher - Guest Poster For WorkAtHomeTruth Leave a Comment

Ipad & Mobile PhoneSocial networking and VoIP may not have replaced the traditional methods of communication, but they can work together to create something even more powerful and effective.

The growth of social media and voice over IP (VoIP) were bound to crash into each other by their very nature and purpose. Social media coupled with smartphones and portable tablets have made it easier than ever to reach out to people whether or not they are near a computer.

VoIP, however, hasn’t completely replaced the phone call. It has enhanced it. It has made it more accessible and inexpensive, two things that every good customer wants from their businesses and services.

Anyone who has ever had to pay roaming charges on a cell phone bill can appreciate the benefits of integrated VoIP. Most VoIP services offer free access if both parties are using the same service or allow unlimited access for a nominal fee. They can also be accessed on a smartphone or portable tablet through Wi-Fi or 3G or 4G access instead of your phone’s call plan.

Unlike traditional phones, it’s also easier to implement into social media networks and connections. For starters, Facebook has already done most of the work for you. The popular social network offers a lower grade form of VoIP with voice chat features and is currently implementing its own VoIP service with phone service integration.

Creating a VoIP link through your social networking sites and services increases the level of communication between you and your customers, clients, and co-workers.

Google also offers a free Google Chat service through Google Mail (Gmail) and Google+. You can also make and receive calls and texts through Google Voice, a free phone service that offers places and receives free local and nationwide long distance phone calls and text messages through computers and smartphone apps.

Twitter may not have a similar feature yet (until it can figure out a way to count the letters in spoken words), but there are ways to implement the two into each other. Twitter’s new layout allows for its users to post more detailed profiles that can point readers to your VoIP contacts on Facebook, Skype, or Google Chat and Gmail. You can also respond to customers and clients through Twitter and direct them to your VoIP contacts through direct messages or Twitter feeds.

The true key to implementing VoIP with social media, of course, is to use these services. It can be very easy for businesses and users who aren’t familiar with either to let them languish in the day-to-day grind of their daily duties. Social networking needs to become a habit, not just with customers and other readers, but also with employees, co-workers, and other businesses. Just putting your VoIP and social media contacts on business cards and correspondence materials can kick-start your habit.

Of course, not all of your customers or fellow businesses have the same sense of drive or need to use VoIP or even social networking on the same level. In fact, some may feel they are being pushed into using them even though they aren’t comfortable with them. That’s because these services have not fully replaced the phone, the fax machine, or other traditional methods of communication and networking, but the rise of social networking is driving the rise of VoIP access and applications and may one day bring the two to such a level. The best way to prepare for this inevitability is to start using the technology in its infancy.

The Most Common Activities in CPanel

September 3, 2012 By Paul Schlegel (Founder, WorkAtHomeTruth) Leave a Comment

CPanel is one of the most robust control panels that web hosting companies can use. When it comes to using CPanel, there are three main tools that I use regularly. Located under the logs section in CPanel, the bandwidth tool is something that I use regularly. When you own a website that gets a very large amount of traffic, you are undoubtedly going to be checking your bandwidth tool often. If you don’t already know, bandwidth is used whenever someone accesses any files on your website.

Bandwidth Tool

Even loading a single webpage on your website uses some amount of bandwidth. The more visitors your website receives on a daily basis the more bandwidth your website is going to use. I use the bandwidth tool because it gives me an excellent overview of how much bandwidth my website is using. The bandwidth tool shows me how much bandwidth my website has used over the last 12 months. It gives me current and historical data from a single interface.

Aside from all of that data, the bandwidth tool tells me what services are using bandwidth for those same time periods. I can check how much bandwidth is being used by FTP, POP3, IMAP, SMTP and HTTP services, which is very useful data. If I could strip down the bandwidth tool to add new features, I would make it so that I can compare bandwidth usage over previous years.

I would also add a feature to be able to monitor bandwidth usage in real-time to see how certain areas of my website are performing. Located under the Files section in CPanel, the Backups tool is something that I use regularly. This tool is absolutely essential, and it has saved my website countless times. I used to think that my website was invincible. I believed that there was no way it would ever get hacked. Until one day it was hacked, and I lost a large portion of my website as a result of the hack because I was not using the backup tool.

Backup Tool

The backup tool lets me create a backup of my website’s database, email forwarders, home directory or everything together. I always use the backup tool to create what is called a full website backup, which is a file that can be used to restore your entire CPanel when your website or CPanel info is hacked. If I could strip down the backup tool, I would add some more features that give me more functionality. I would like to add a feature that lets me use the full website backup file.

Email Accounts

Located under the Mail section in CPanel, the Email Accounts tool is the third tool that I use daily. This tool is essential for me because I have many different email accounts setup. When you run a business, you need to have multiple email accounts for customers to reach you at.

I have email accounts setup for support, billing and personal questions. I use the Email Accounts tool to access all of these email accounts, which allows me and my support team to connect and serve our customers. If I could strip down the Email Accounts tools, I would give it added functionality that would allow it to connect with more web mail servers.

SquirrelMail, Roundcube and Horde are great web mail servers, but personally, I would like to see some more options here. Out of all of the many powerful tools that CPanel has to offer, the tools mentioned above are the three that I use most commonly.
