Why People Become Travel Writers

January 2, 2013 By Victoria Heckstall - Guest Poster For WorkAtHomeTruth Leave a Comment

There are many different types of writers available in the writing world. Each one has their own niche that they specialize in.  People who like to travel naturally have the inclination toward travel writing. Here are some perks many people experience when they decide to become travel writers:

Memories

Everyone travels from time to time so one of the best ways to keep record of your trips is to write about them. However, to have an incentive to record every trip that you take, you could consider sharing your adventures as a travel writer. You can get paid for your work while also having your families memories recorded at the same time. Not to mention the fact that since you actually visited the destination that you are about to write about you do not have to worry about going through the research phase like many other writers do.

Travel Writers Are Always Needed

Travel writers are writers who are often in high demand. This is because people are always going to take vacations and visit a new place which is going to require them to have to search about their destination so they can know what to expect. If you are someone who travels a lot, travel writing could be a very lucrative career for you because people will know they can expect nothing but the honest truth when they come to your website.

Can Be Done From Home

Another reason people decide to become travel writers is because it is something that can be done from the comfort of their homes or any other location that they are at. To be a travel writer you do not have to go to an office to write every day. If you wanted to you could whip out your laptop while on vacation and write about each of the events as they happen.  This makes composing the final draft even easier.

Show off Photography Skills

Some photographers even jump on the travel writer bandwagon so they can show off their skills. When they visit new places they take beautiful photos which they can then display in their travel articles. This attracts more readers to their blogs as well as lets people know that they specialize in the photography field as well.

Overall, travel writers have great careers that allow them to enjoy something they are passionate about while being able to share it with others. So, if you are someone who travels a lot and could use some extra money, becoming a travel writer is definitely something that you are going to want to consider.

Working From Home: Top Tips For Telecommuters

Homeworking: challenges and rewards

Those of us who work from home occasionally or every day are likely to face similar challenges spending the working day out of the office. For many of us, homeworking at first feels a little bit unusual. It’s strange to be surrounded by your own furniture and decor and yet be dealing with work stuff at 9 o’clock on a Monday morning. And then there’s the fact that, well, you’re alone all day. So it’s no surprise that it takes a little bit of adjustment to get used to such a radically new routine.

But there are some real upsides to homeworking. For one thing, there’s no commute. And those of us who have spent hours and hours of our lives on rainy motorways travelling twenty or thirty miles to and from work – week after week – will know just how attractive a job with no commute can be.

So, how can we get the best out of homeworking?

Focus on the benefits of telecommuting

Remind yourself that you’ve no physical commute, and what a bonus that is. And give yourself a pat on the back for working so efficiently – with so few distractions and no chance of being waylaid on your way to the water cooler, you’re in a good position in terms of productivity.

Recharge every now and then

Regular screen breaks are encouraged for everyone who uses a computer. Now, if you work in an office you might spend your screen break moments looking out of the window or heading off to the water cooler for a moment’s chat and maybe even a cup of rehydrating water. But as a homeworker you can stick on your favourite relaxing music for a couple of minutes, or maybe stand in the garden and get some fresh air.

Define your space

Any article you read on homeworking will contain a variant of this golden rule. And rightly so – because if you’re working from home you need a work zone where the work gets done, and and a home life zone where all the out of work hours are spent. But it doesn’t need to be an office if you don’t have a spare room.  You can use a corner or other suitable space within your home. Some people – most famously the writer Roald Dahl – report great success working in their shed. “Shedwork” may not be a business buzzword that’s going to go viral anytime soon, but it’s a growing phenomenon and even has a UK website devoted to it!

Network and communicate

Okay, so during working hours you don’t look at Facebook. Or not often anyway. But out of work hours it’s worth sharing tips and stories with other homeworkers you know either through your own organisation or through your circle of friends. It’s amazing how swapping a few stories about our experiences can help morale and motivation.

Dress for success

It might seem counterintuitive if the only person you’re going to see during the course of the morning is the person who’s come rouind to take the gas or electricity meter readings, but wearing smart fresh clothes is about more than appearance – it also positively affects the way we feel about ourselves. There is of course the temptation to stay in pyjamas for a while, but your routine of arriving at your home office dressed for success will overcome that.

Watch your stomach

Now that you’re working from home, there’s a real opportunity for healthy eating. And assembling your lunch from shop bought ingredients is economical – so it’s a double bonus that you’ll be eating healthily too: avocadoes, tomatoes, a bit of lean chicken on brown bread. Lovely!

Manage your stress

There’s a wealth of stress management literature out there – and it’s worth seeking out ways of avoiding stress. Just because you’re working from home doesn’t mean you’ll be immune to it. So gather up some info on everything from time management to breathing exercises an equip yourself for being a stress-free homeworker.

Exercise

Get active at some point during the working day. Even if it’s just a ten minute walk at lunchtime. Being active helps us in all sorts of ways – it’s good for the way we feel. And of course with no commute, you have some time freed up to go to the gym or the swimming pool after work.

And remember …

You’re not stuck in an airless office – something many people out there would be thankful for. So when the end of the working day arrives and you leave your work zone (or shed) for the day – remember all the positives of this ultra-modern working mode.

Planning a Career in Private Investigations?

August 6, 2012 By Julia Mitchen - Guest Poster For WorkAtHomeTruth Leave a Comment

Shedding a little light on the field of private investigating for those interested in making a career move.

The Private Investigator: a challenging job with a notorious reputation for being as shady as a group of palm trees, but can we now say that the ‘PI’ is not as shady as the cliché shows to us in the media today?

PIs or private investigators can be hired for many reasons however a reputation has surrounded the PI title as being shady and unprofessional. However, as the media has shown PIs can come in handy in times of great need and desperation.

Most private investigators have to be a member of a recognised association within the industry to practice their career path so the myths of people peeping through windows or hiding in bushes can finally be put to rest. Private investigators can deal with matters covering a range of things: everything from missing family members to suspected infidelity and from corporate to commercial matters.

Private investigation also has the perception of a typically male career path, however it is an equally occupied job. This kind of work requires the person to have some kind of marketing niche if they want to thrive, although the path can be started from scratch. For example, a retired police officer could specialise in PI work surrounding criminal activity by using his knowledge from his past.

The typical cliché of the private investigator being a well-paid job is not a cliché, it is more of an unspoken reality. A fee of anything from £40-400 could be charged however national averages have shown that the average of a PI fee will range from £35-75 an hour. As most Private Investigators will be part of an agency, 25% of their earnings will be taken from the agency. For example, if a private investigator charges £35 for an hour of his/her time £8.75 will be deducted from their overall pay straight away because of their affiliation with a company or agency supplying and marketing their particular set of skills.

So if you have ever considered becoming a private investigator, four important truths need to be remembered:

1.    PIs are as professional as office workers.
2.    A Licence is a must! You cannot practice what you preach if you don’t have a licence to show for it!
3.    Have an idea of what market you wish to join or join an agency surrounded by your preferred idea.
4.    Always remember why you joined the profession in the first place!
